As winter reluctantly withdraws its cold clutches from the school district, spring begins its spirited march forwards. Frequent bouts of rain nurtures new growth while spontaneous bursts of warmth hint to the coming summer months. Spring is an undeniably tumultuous season.
Blueberry muffins are one of the foods that, just like spring, toe the fine lines defining it. Are blueberry muffins a snack, or are they a dessert? Are they better enjoyed wrapped in blankets, or are they more welcome in a picnic basket? This simple treat can be well adapted to many situations, making it a perfect addition to your spring recipes! So grab your mixing bowl and get started!
The batter for blueberry muffins is usually quite simple to assemble: the dry ingredients and the wet ingredients are combined separately and are later folded together with the blueberries.
But when it comes to adding blueberries to the recipe, the process can differ. The food blog Serious Eats explains that some recipes call for coating the blueberries with flour to prevent the blueberries from sinking to the bottom and sticking to the pan. This belief, however, was put to the test.
After trying multiple methods, the author concluded that while the flour did very little to keep the blueberries from sinking, adding plain batter before adding the blueberries did. America’s Test Kitchen suggests an alternative method to achieving this: using frozen blueberries instead of fresh blueberries.
Recipes can also differ when it comes to adding toppings to the muffins. AllRecipes, a digital library of recipes curated for the home cook, includes a crumb topping in their blueberry muffin recipe. The topping is made from flour, butter, cinnamon, and sugar, but recipes may differ from source to source. Serious Eats, on the other hand, suggests sprinkling granulated sugar on the muffins while they are still warm.
And feel free to experiment! America’s Test Kitchen has an alternative recipe for blueberry muffins that includes lemon zest. AllRecipes even have a recipe of blueberry zucchini muffins for a healthy twist!
Blueberry muffins can be as simple or as elaborate as you want, and serve as the perfect base for experimentation. So go try your own version of blueberry muffins!
