Apple fritters are a simple and tasty recipe.
Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 2/3 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
For the apple filling:
- 2 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
Instructions:
- Make the dough: In a bowl, combine warm milk and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy. Add sugar, melted butter, egg, and vanilla. Stir to combine. Mix in flour, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until a soft dough forms. Knead by hand or with a mixer for 5–6 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled (about 1 hour).
- Make the apple filling: In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Cook for 5-7 minutes until the apples are tender and slightly caramelized. Let cool completely.
- Form the fritters: Roll the dough out into a rough rectangle (about ½ inch thick).
Scatter the apple filling over the dough, then fold the dough over itself a few times (like folding a letter) to mix the apples in. Roughly chop the folded dough into 3-inch blobs, pressing each one gently into a round fritter shape.
- Let rest for 20–30 minutes.
- Cook in the oven at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
