From the music blasting on the bus ride there to shoutouts on the way home, the varsity girls lacrosse team is all about energy. They brought that energy to the field on May 19 for their District I 2A Playoff game against Villa Maria Academy.
Though the game ended in a 5-15 loss, the girls had many impressive plays and were only down three points going into halftime.
“Villa was a very talented team. We’ve seen them multiple times last year, and we fought to the last minute. The score definitely did not reflect our effort,” sophomore Tessa Dignazio said.
The team ended with a 9-11 record, including a 17-1 win in the first round of playoffs against Jenkintown High School.
“The season was amazing. We maybe didn’t have the record that we wanted, but I think we grew a lot as a team, and I think we’re a really young team, and we’re going to continue to get better,” junior Weiler Graham said.
The athletes are already thinking about next season, focused on growth. Communication is one of the most important parts of the game, and something the team will work on according to Graham.
“I think next year, just continuing to get our team really bonded. I think that really helps us on the field,” Graham said.
Freshman Bess Pickup agrees with Graham. Pickup’s older peers made her feel accepted immediately, making her first year on the team a positive one.
“Everyone’s energy is so welcoming and so happy all the time,” Pickup said.
The group is already close, and working on their relationships can only help. Dignazio loves the team as well as the game, which contributes to her performance on the field.
“[Playing lacrosse with Haven is] the best thing ever,” Dignazio said. “It’s a close community. [I’m] playing with the girls in my backyard. Everyone’s here for each other, everyone’s supporting everyone, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
