The varsity lacrosse team battled it out in their Tuesday, April 21 game against Springfield, eventually losing 8-14.
The game started out strong, with sophomore Blake Fairbanks and junior Georgia Graham scoring Haven the first two points within the first four minutes. The first quarter ended 2-4, with Haven working to catch up. The gap grew later, with Springfield scoring four times in the first quarter and keeping their momentum up.
Despite the growing point gap and mounting pressure at the game, Fairbanks proceeded to score three times during the game, and Graham twice. Junior Delaney O’Reilly also scored a goal, along with sophomore Tessa Dignazio and senior Keira Mattai.
“I think that it’s really fun to share [scoring] moments with your teammates and making those important plays in times where we’re playing super hard teams who we really want to beat is just really cool,” Fairbanks said.
Springfield is ranked first in the state for girls’ lacrosse by PIAA, making them a tough team to beat.
“I think it was good,” senior Keira Mattai said. “The way that we hung in there was really good, and we only lost by a few so [I’m proud of us].”
Members of the team were proud of their work.
“We were up high at the start, and then we kind of got down a little bit, but we came back really well,” junior Astrid Beach said. “We didn’t take them lightly, and everything that we were doing in the game just kept going uphill. I’m proud of us.”
Despite facing a challenging team, Fairbanks believes that Haven performed well.
“I thought that today was a really competitive game,” Fairbanks said. “I think that we really held it together in our first three quarters, and they’re a really great team. I think that our offense was working well. Our defense killed it. I think that we had a lot of important plays happening, and they’re a hard team to beat, but we really gave it our all.”
The team looks forward to their upcoming game on Thursday, April 23 against Ridley.
