The sun beat down on the field as fans and players tried to cool off in any way possible. Coming into the game, Haven was 14-0 and hoped to complete an undefeated season. They unfortunately fell short, losing 6-7 in seven hard fought innings.
For Haven, freshman Cole Hurwitz started on the mound, pitching several strong innings. However, with an error from the infield and a solid double from Penncrest, the Tigers were able to put up two runs. The Panthers played from behind the whole game but kept it close, never falling behind by more than two runs.
The team got a lot of hits throughout the game, but they weren’t always able to score. Freshman first baseman Phineas Bean had two doubles, one of them getting a run across the board.
For the last couple of innings, freshman Sam Greco came in as a relief pitcher. He had a few strikeouts but with another couple of errors defensively, Penncrest was able to score.
Coach Mr. Christopher Heiskell was proud of the team and felt that they fought hard against a strong opponent in Penncrest.
“I thought these guys played a really tough baseball game. They took their first loss, but they hit the ball well, they moved well on the bases, and they played well defensively,” Heiskell said.
Freshman second baseman Gavin Huffman had good contact with the ball and some key plays defensively. He was proud of the effort that he and the rest of the team gave.
“It wasn’t our team’s best game. We’re sad to lose our winning streak, but we fought hard and we know we’ll be back,” Huffman said.
Heiskell was extremely proud of the team as a whole this season. He couldn’t be happier with their effort and the results they have produced this season.
“I mean, these guys hit better than any team I’ve coached before. These guys are the best team I think I’ve had the privilege of coaching,” Heiskell said.
Overall, the team had a lot of fun throughout the season and a lot of chemistry together. They were constantly cheering and encouraging each other throughout the whole game.
“I think we’re playing pretty good this year,” Huffman said. “Anyone will tell you that and there’s no one I’d rather play with than the guys out on the field.”
