Students and parents alike walked through a silver and black balloon arch and an arc of posters with the faces and names of the seniors of the wrestling team. Only one of the faces was a girl– senior Naomi Senyo, who wrestled on the team for the first time this year.
“I literally heard over the announcements that there was girls wrestling, and there was an interest meeting, and I was like, ‘why not?’ I have nothing else to do in the winter,” Senyo said. “So I was like, ‘why not wrestle’ and the team experience has been awesome.”
The girls’ team is growing little by little, with the eight students from last year becoming nine this year.
“It’s incredible [to see the program grow],” junior Lane Harrington said. “I never thought I would see the day we had nine girls on a team, and so it’s just so much fun to see everyone out here having a good time.”
The night went well for the team, with seven wins, five forfeits, and one loss. Every girl left with either a win or a win by forfeit under their belt.
“I won my match by pin– I usually get, like, tech falls, which means I usually win by points,” sophomore Cam Dixon said. “So it was good to get a pin, especially on the last meet.”
Freshman Khloe Payne won the last match, ending the senior night on a good note.
“You’re trying to think about how you’re doing… just try your best and try to win and do it for your team, your family, and everybody in the world,” Payne said.
Overall, Senyo was very grateful for the support of the team and coaches over her season of wrestling.
“The team, in and of itself, is so supportive,” Senyo said. “There’s like nine girls and coaches that work with you where you’re at, and they really just get you better overall, no matter from where you’re starting… It’s a very supportive environment.”
