Cheers erupt from the sidelines as basketballs bounce on all four courts in the gym during the Chris King basketball tournament.
The 27th annual games, named for former Strath Haven student Chris King, were held on February 13. King passed away from cancer in 1998.
After King’s passing, the class of 2002 cabinet decided to hold the tournament in his honor. Some years include school-wide assemblies for the game, but this year had match-ups between classes during every block.
Classes signed up to play each other, each class having to pay a dollar per person. The money goes toward the Chris King Memorial Scholarship.
Students and staff alike enjoy the tradition, whether that be for the actual game or socializing with friends.
“It’s one of my favorite days of the year,” physical education gym/health teacher Ms. Jenna Butler said. “It brings everybody in the school together.”
Freshman Kylie Carter was surprised by the amount of people at the tournament.
“We donated for a good cause,” she said. “I didn’t expect so many people in the gym, it’s fun seeing other classes and competitions.”
Senior Naomi Senyo agrees. Although she didn’t play, she enjoyed watching her classmates.
“It’s pretty cool to be able to see your classmates go out and [play],” Senyo said. “I’ve been here for moral support. It’s fun and interesting to see kids go out there and play.”
“It’s a lot of fun,” freshman William McFadden said. “Some games might not be the most competitive, but I think it’s a fun thing to do.”
