Varsity boys soccer falls 2-1 in scrimmage, first game on new turf

The score was good, the turf was good, and the game was good. At least until Haven gave up two goals in the fourth quarter.

The boys’ varsity soccer team played their first game on the new King Field turf in a scrimmage against West Chester East on August 22.

Being a scrimmage, it was played in four quarters, rather than halves like a normal soccer game.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Panthers had been in control of the entire scrimmage.

“I’d say three quarters of it was pretty well rehearsed, but the last quarter of it was not as good,” senior Nico Taylor said. “We got scored on two times, we just got to work on that.”

New varsity athletes had some playing time, and their inexperience may have contributed to the loss.

“Me and some of the younger kids, we came into the game, and we played very well for the third quarter, but we messed up in the fourth quarter, gave up some goals,” freshman Halen O’Neill said.

Some athletes appreciated the new turf field, which was approved by the school board last March and installed over the summer.

“It’s so much better,” O’Neill said. “The old turf was flat, and the ball really rolled.”

The varsity boys soccer team has their first scrimmage on the new turf at King Field for the upcoming season on August 21, 2023. The team lost 2-1 to West Chester East “I think it will be a good season, there are a lot of good players and we work hard,” Lucas Molloy, one of the three freshmen on the team, said. “As a team we could always be working hard and always be moving to the next step.” (Roxanna Shelton)
