The boys basketball team lost to Springfield 45-51 in a thrilling matchup at the Strath Haven High School gym on Friday, December 13. Despite the loss, hopes remain high for the rest of the season.
The Panthers came into the game with a 2-1 record, winning their last matchup against Plumstead Christian 67-32 on Thursday, December 12. The Cougars entered with a 4-0 record, defeating Marple Newtown 60-48 on Tuesday, December 10.
Haven started out the game strong, leading by ten points within the first four minutes of the game.
“I think it was a good team effort,” junior guard Theo Jauregui said. “We did really good.”
The Cougars managed to bounce back in the second quarter, ending the half 24-20 for Springfield.
“[Our biggest challenges], I would say, were our free throws and boxing out,” Jauregui said. “But I think we did fine.”
Jauregui managed to score eight points with two three-point shots. Sophomore John Reilly was the top performer of the night, scoring ten points.
Springfield missed multiple free throws throughout the night. The Panther Pack showed up in numbers, raising the volume during Springfield’s free throws and keeping the energy high throughout the game.
The Panthers fought to the end, playing aggressively in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, multiple missed shots and fouls resulted in Haven’s loss.
“We just have to keep executing our plays. We have to box out,” Jauregui said. ‘I’m going to say that because we lost a game on that.”
The Panthers will travel to Radnor (1-1) on Tuesday, December 17, looking to improve to a winning record against the Raptors.
