Freshmen Kenzie MacCallum, Fiona Seale and Tabitha Minton and sophomore Cali Fries also attended to participate in the day’s program of student journalism events.
In the morning, students participated in a press conference with members of the Penn State Blue Band. The afternoon featured trivia contests on journalism and pop culture, as well as a presentation on media law for student journalists by Penn State Associate Professor Dr. Amy Kristin Sanders.
Onsite writing, photography, and video contests were all based on themes at the press conference and the entire day of student journalism. Most contests were judged by Penn State and PSPA experts during the students’ lunch break. Photography and media submissions were due to PSPA by April 8 to allot students to time to edit and finish their work, and results are expected by mid-April for those contests.
The 2024 Pennsylvania Student Journalist of the Year, Ayaan Shah of Emmaus High School shared remarks about his path in journalism, and the 2024 Journalism Teacher of the Year Ms. Shelby Ramirez accepted a certificate of recognition. PSPA presented the Keystone Award, recognizing special dedication to Pennsylvania student journalism, to Emily Clevenger, Manager of Recruitment for the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications.
