The girls varsity lacrosse team defeated the Lower Merion Aces with a dominant 12-4 victory on Friday, May 2 at George L. King Field.
Coming into the game, the Panthers hoped to maintain their position at the #1 seed for the PIAA District One 2A playoffs. They got the job done on Friday, getting one step closer to the playoff season.
The night started with the celebration of the team’s six seniors: captain Annie Dignazio, captain Kate Fox, captain Mallory Cavanagh, Maryella Gill, Kaia Smith, and Helena Kaufman.
“I think it’s important to recognize the people that put in a lot of time in this organization, and recognize the people that have been here the longest and know what they’re doing on the field,” Cavanagh said.
The Panthers welcomed the Aces to King Field by scoring three goals within the first minute of the game. Fox scored the first, while Dignazio scored the other two.
“We have new people in with senior night. We had most of the upperclassmen playing, and we were still able to click really well,” Fox said.
The Panthers continued their dominant streak throughout the first half, allowing one goal and ending the half 9-1.
“We dominated the draw today,” Cavanagh said. “We had the 50/50 balls on the ground, and we worked every part of our offense and worked our plays, which is important for building our players’ confidence.”
The game ended 12-4, with Dignazio leading the Panthers in scoring with five goals, followed by Fox with four. Fox reached 100 career goals with the Panthers during their home win against State College on April 5.
“It’s a really satisfying feeling, especially with the seniors I’ve been playing with since middle school, some of them elementary school,” Fox said. “So, being able to win this celebration game was super fun.”
The Panthers will host the Pennsbury Falcons on Monday, May 5, at George L. King Field at 5:30 p.m., looking to keep their team at the top of the standings.
