On June 9, students, faculty, and friends packed into the yellow and blue gymnasium of the Mirenda Center at Neumann University to watch and celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2023.
The bleachers and balcony were full of attendees, and from above, the bold “SH” on the tops of the graduates’ caps could be seen from afar.
Lasting from 5-7 pm, the ceremony was full of speeches from seniors, staff, and administration. The two student speakers chosen by the faculty and administration were Ella Grossman and Annie Tolson. This year’s faculty speaker, elected by the senior class, was science teacher Mr. Timothy Styer.
Seniors Dyvné Lee and Aashna Pandey revealed the class flag that they designed and created collaboratively. The bold design will be added to the permanent collection of flags in the office and third floor hallway.
As Assistant Principals Mrs. Tabatha Duffy and Mr. Thomas McLaughlin called the graduates to the stage to receive their diplomas, the consistent wave of cheering and applause from families and friends left smiles on the graduates’ faces and a joyous atmosphere for all.
According to the program, 278 graduates of the class of 2023 are the newest Strath Haven High School alumni.
“All I can think about is what I’m grateful for,” senior Dae Taylor said. “The amazing music program, all the amazing teachers, and the experiences I’ve had was really remarkable. A little bit surreal, but really remarkable.”
Under the direction of music teacher Mr. Nick Pignataro, undergraduate band members played a jazzy tune as a classic cap toss closed the formal event. Seniors departed to the auxiliary gym to find a receiving line of faculty and staff ready to share hugs and final farewells.
“I actually have no words,” senior Andy Zeng said, summing up the emotions of the day. “It’s just like, ‘I just graduated!’”
