On the evening of Friday, December 13, Haven’s dancers will showcase their talent and creativity to connect with the audience. After the crowd was left in awe from the dance showcases last year, various things needed to be done to get the new performers to the stage.
Rehearsing is an important part of getting the club to be the best that they can be for the showcase. Junior Orli Schoff, one of the leaders of Dance Haven, provides several rehearsals for the dancers she choreographed.
“We have two to three rehearsals, I would say. Typically, I have around three, but I have been in dances which have had five rehearsals along with the two dress rehearsals and sometimes a quick run-through before a performance,” Schoff said.
All the leaders are doing things behind the scenes to ensure everyone is ready for the performance. Preparing music and getting the program together are all things being done.
“Most dances are at least a minute long, sometimes more,” she said.
Junior Dance Haven leader Norah Magargee said she expects there to be around thirteen dances in the performance.
Thinking about preparations for the performance, Magargee shares what she is doing as a leader to get the students ready.
“We are rehearsing our dances, getting the music from each choreographer, and making sure everyone’s ready for dress rehearsals,” Magargee said.
For the performance, dancers can be in numerous dances with different styles like jazz and contemporary, in addition to different music genres and songs.
Freshman Elizabeth Iversen shares what each group does to get the dancers together and how her group prepares for the winter showcase.
“It’s usually like once a week, or every two weeks, we just go over the dance, really, and the announcements happen in a text group chat,” Iversen said. “It’s mainly practice videos or information about when we’re meeting up next.”
According to senior leader Sydney Williams, the performance involves logistics beyond the choreography.
“We are currently figuring out the order of dances and getting all of the music in .mp3 form to be able to give to the tech people,” Williams says. “I also met with the hosts, and we planned out some skit ideas.”
The Dance Haven Winter Showcase is scheduled for Friday, December 13, at 7 p.m. in the Strath Haven Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.
